Alumni are warmly invited to attend an afternoon at Reed Hall celebrating novelist and Honorary Graduate Kamila Shamsie on 9th October 2023.
Kamila Shamsie is the author of eight novels, including Burnt Shadows (2009), A God in Every Stone (2014) and Home Fire (2018) which won the Women’s Prize for Fiction, was long listed for the Man Booker Prize, and shortlisted for the Costa Prize. A Vice-President of the Royal Society of Literature and Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Manchester, she grew up in Karachi, and now lives in London. Her most recent novel is Best of Friends (2022), which won the Karachi Literature Festival/Getz fiction award (Pakistan) and was shortlisted for the Indie Book Awards. Her novels have been translated into more than 30 languages.
The event will begin with a symposium in which Kamila’s work will be discussed by an esteemed literary panel comprising of; Professor Ankhi Mukherjee (University of Oxford), Dr Rehana Ahmed (Queen Mary, University of London), Professor Peter Morey (University of Birmingham) and Dr Florian Stadtler (Bristol University).
The symposium will then be followed by Kamila Shamsie in conversation with Professor Amina Yaqin of World and Postcolonial literatures from the Department of English and Creative Writing.
Guests are warmly welcome to stay for refreshments afterwards.
